"Jack Dempsey, The Manassa Mauler, Jack The Giant Killer, Kid Blackie, Two Legged Tiger.....
These names were given to one of the greatest champions in the history of modern boxing. I am one of the few left that had the pleasure of shaking his hand numerous times as a patron of his famous Broadway Restaurant across from the old Madison Square Garden in New York City. Stationed at Govenor's Island in 1956 and 57 and the First Army Welterweight Champion, I was instructed by my Dad to visit Dempsey and tell the old champ that Joe Williams said hello. I did tell him that my Dad Joe Williams said hello and he said, "sure kid I remenber" of course he didn't, but it made my Dad happy and he told all that Jack remembered Wildcat Williams and sent his best wishes to all in Western Massachusetts. As a youngster, Jack Dempsey was always on the tip of my Grandfather Joe Sr. and my Father Josephs tongue. As was John L. Sullivan, both were the last of the bare knuckle saloon fighters and shared the reputations of the toughest there ever was. This book Dempsey by the man himself was given to me by an old fighter and friend of mine as a gift. Being around the entertaiment business, and a working voice over actor, I realized less than halfway through the book that I wanted to record the story of my greatest hero - Jack Dempsey Heavyweight Champion of the world."
What they're saying...

Please don't stop! This is an awesome CD set, I only hope that Verne and his pals have many, many more of these types planned for the future. I did not want it to end,TREMENDOUS.

Highly entertaining, great narration and period music. The CD held me thru all 7 discs. Made me wish my commute to work was longer. Describes a fascinating life through hard times and good. Verne Williams is a great narrator that kept me into the story throughout. I highly recommend Jack Dempsey.

Williams is fantastic. Dempsey by Verne Williams was a find. Being a fan of Dempsey I did a little research and found out that Williams was a boxer in his youth. This made me think he knows what he is talking about. Besides the material being a gold mine of history, William's voice and reading made it an indredible adventure to listen to. The book was so beautiful that it made my recent trips seem like minutes instead of hours.
